Celeron vs P4 vs AMD Barton.

WOW that is pretty expensive for the AMD 2500+  I just bought 1 for a PC I was building and it cost me $70. Same with the P4, I just bought a P4 3GHz with 1mb cache for a customer for $218. (newegg.com)

But on to your question.. I would get the AMD over the P4 and the P4 over the celeron.

Those are good prices, but remember I'm in Australia.. Aussie $ is 0.69US$  Yer still a bit cheaper though.

The main diff between the Celeron and P4 for Linux is the on-chip cache, I'm more wondering if a firewall would utilise that extra cache heavily or would it be counting more on pure clock cycles.  If cache is important for Astaro then I'd definately go the P4.  AMD better and cheaper for firewall though, only reason I looked at P4 is they have some nice gigabit mainboards.

Go with a CPU with a large, full speed on-chip level 2 cache. The fact that ASL is running as a firewall doesn't really enter into the performance issue. You are running a Linux kernel, which is a 32 bit multitasking OS. More CPU cache will always improve performance. The cache in the P4 formfactor Celerons is severely handicapped by running at half the CPU speed. That is why a 1.3 GHz P3 formfactor Celeron actually ends up outperforming the 1.7 GHz P4 formfactor Celeron, since the P3 style Celerons run their L2 cache at the full CPU clock speed.

Go with the AMD Athlon CPU. It will give you the most bang for the buck. The Athlon CPUs have a better L2 chip cache to main memory prefetch design (borrowed from the DEC Alpha CPU) than the Intel P4. There are also some very nice Athlon based motherboards available, from large mobo companies such as ABIT, ASUS and GigaByte.

they also have 3 math units per cpu do things like virus scanning and encryption(aka vpn's) will run much faster on the athlons.

You guys got any proof that the larger cache will help ASL much?  Or are you just guessing ?
(I've always been curious about cache in these situations)...

I cannot say anything about the cache, but if you need a good AMD mb with Gbit, take a look at for example ASUS A7V600 (and SE).
