Unfortunately, Astaro does not yet support Promise FastTrak or Ultra IDE controllers. You are not the only one who has this problem.

We can only hope that Astaro's software development team will address this issue soon, by including the drivers for the very popular Promise IDE controllers in the ASL distribution.

I don't ever see Astaro support any of the Promise RAID controllers. Reason is that Promise will not release its driver source GPL. All kernel source support for Promise are based on reverse engineered drivers and they are not reliable, at least as reliable as your firewall needs to be. Using non-open source drivers from Promise would be a security risk for Astaro as they know everything in ASL at the source level.

While Promise is found in many places it is no great loss. As RAID goes Promise is pretty lame. It is really just a software RAID where the device driver is the RAID engine. Promise cards are really just multi-channel IDE cards. This is why they can be made to work with one disk attached as a standard IDE drive. One reason why Promise doesn't release driver source, everyone would see it is just a software RAID and could be easily ported to any onboard IDE chipset.

If you want RAID you would be better off going with something that has real hardware RAID in it like 3-Ware, Silicon Image, Adaptec or Intel's SATA RAID controllers.

not all of them are..the vast majority are but the higher end stuff does have a hardware controller on the board and therefore does not use the cpu..[:)]

You make some very good points about Promise and their controller cards. I do agree with you that theirs is not the best RAID implementation.  However, Promise controller chips are very common, they are often found embedded on high end motherboards from companies such as Asus and Gigabyte, which makes the lack of support for them in ASL quite frustrating.
