HowTo Power off?

The available shutdown command is accessed via: Webadmin --> System --> Shutdown/Restart --> Select action: --> Shutdown, then click on Start. Does this not turn off your machine?

Tried that, exactly the same display on the console as I get for shutdown -h now, a whole stream of processes being shutdown then the fs remounted readonly then 'power off' displayed!  In fact it almost looks as though that is NOT intended to power off as web admin displays the following text when I initiate the shutdown...

"System Shutdown has been initiated. If your system has a beeper, you"ll hear continous beeping when the system is ready to be powered off."

Anyway it is quicker to start my XP box shutting down, go over to the fw, log in and type 'shutdown -h now', it usually beats the XP box down!

Version 4 does not turn off electricity! You have to power it off manually.

nod i have yet to see ASL power down the machine when you request a shutdown..[:)]

I have 2 units that i am testing one will shutdown with full power off and the other will not shutdown with power off instead it just beeps.  They are both running version 5.0 the only difference is the one that powers down is a 2.4ghz asus motherboard. the one that beeps is a dell 733mhz.  I know that others have the same issue of the power off the system instead of beeps.  The only thing that is different is the motherboards.

Well, with ASL being a firewall router, the only time it should be nessessary to shut it down, is when you have to do hardware maintenance, such as adding more memory, or a new Ethernet card.
 
My ASL box has been running nonstop since I last made changes to it back on March 10th this year. The shutdown command is not something I get to use all that often.

ACPI was introduced with Astaro 4.008 (I think). Versions after that can turn off the power supply if the BIOS supports it.

Hmmm seems to be a lack of consensus here!

As I am running ASL at home it gets powered off when I have finished with it, rather than hitting the big red switch I want to shut the system down properly, otherwise I would agree that a fw would not normally be shut down.

Linux is capable of powering off a machine & the 'correct' way of shutting down a linux machine is to issue the shutdown command, therefore I would expect Astaro to issue the shutdown command even if web admin is used, so I can't see the problem with doing it from the console.

So my basic question is where/how do I enable ACPI or APM support & which one is supported?

The ACPI configuration settings can be found in the Bios on modern, ATX style PCs.
The older, AT style motherboards do not have the ACPI technology built into them.

Your best bet is to leave your ASL firewall running 24x7, as this is how the product has been designed to operate. ASL rolls over its daily logs at midnight every day, so it expects to be on at that time. If you run your ASL on low power PC hardware, the extra electricity consumption should not be much of an issue. Leaving the machine on continuously also reduces the stress on the hard drive and power supply by reducing the number of start up power cycles that the equipment is exposed to. Electronic gear that is left on continuously will last longer than gear that is turned on and off every day.
