Two questions (new user)

Hi all.

I downloaded the latest version last night and burned the iso using k3b from my debian box, but the disk is not bootable.  Is this normal?  Also, the box that will be my router only has 64M of ram, but this router will only serve as a glorified Linksys router; just a little bit of NAT and port forwarding, nothing fancy.  Can I get by with only 64M, and should I perhaps download v4.x instead of 5.x? (Less hw req's).

    Hi, try V4.x first, build a working configuration and backup this. . So you can update later on, when several bugs in V5.x are fixed and you have possibly some RAM left for your box... [;)]on...

    I tried V4 with 64M RAM - but its very, very slow. Now in this machine works a Version of IP-Cop.(patch 9 or something like that)  - lower HW-Req and no probs. I think its a better idear for your low requirements...

    Thanks for the speedy reply and your input.
    I need more of a router than a firewall, mind you...does IPCop provide the sort of routing that I need?
    Btw, I'm on PPPoE DSL...

    do a googly for linux router..there are several that will fit your bill and run from a floppy so no hdd no cd-rom nice and silent..and 64 megs of ram for them are heaven.

    I need a router that can provide DHCP to at least two boxes inside the LAN, just like my (crappy) Linksys does, but without the lockups.

    Well, I installed Astaro anyway, since I already had the cd downloaded, but...
    now that it's up, I can't do anything with it.  My astaro box is set up as 192.168.1.1, subnet 255.255.255.0, bcast 192.168.1.255.  My client machine (one of them) is 192.168.1.77, same subnet and bcast as astaro.  I can't ping Astaro, I can't log in through https://192.168.1.1/, I can't do anything.

    i bet your issue is the 96 megs of ram..what cpu are you using ?

    600mhz celeron (coppermine). Actually, it's not the ram...it was me being retarded. I was using regular cat5. I've now got a switch hooked up and I can log on to the Astaro box, however, the internal machines cannot reach the internet...s'pose I have some docs to read...

    You will need to create a masquerade rule that will NAT the internal network against the external interface. Something like this will do the trick:

    LOCAL_NAT  Internal_Network__ -> All / All  MASQ__External  None

    Then you need packet filtering permissions to let your traffic through. To get you started, a filter rule such as:

    Internal_Network_  Any Any Allow

    will let all the traffic from your internal net out.
