some newbie questions

To connect via PPPoE, you would install as normal using the CD, login to the webinterface and select Network > Interfaces.

Assuming Astaro has picked up your DSL modem, you would choose Add network interface, choose the type as PPPoE and select your DSL card as the hardware you want to use.

Connecting and disconnecting is as easy as logging into the webmin and clicking on the green light next to the network interface to change its status from up to down.

Accounting is also easy in Astaro. Just turn accounting on under Network > Accounting, and you can browse the reports under Reporting> Accounting. Read the online help to get more detail about it [:)]

But it would be nice, if there's a simple way to connect and disconnect.

The main reason that SmoothWall created a separate Connect/Disconnect page, is because it is designed to be used with dial up modem connections, not just broadband.

Astaro designed ASL to be used exclusively with always-on broadband connections. This eliminates the need for a connect page, since you never really want to disconnect the ASL firewall from the broadband modem.

If you do wish to cycle the link, clicking on the red/green traffic light icon next to the external interface definition serves the same purpose.

I think his problem, and i'm prob way off base here, is that he wants something simple so other members of his family can use it.

But i'm sure they can be trained to cycle the link with the red/green button.

[/ QUOTE ]One of the strengths of a product such as ASL, is that only the administrator of the firewall needs to use Webadmin and configure it. Once it is operational, there is no real need for the ordinary end users to even know that the firewall exist.

If he is looking for a product that his whole family can safely mess with on a regular basis (something I would not recommend), than maybe ASL is not his best choice.

With SDSL/ADSL using PPPoE you just leave it connected all the time. There's no need to disconnect. The danger of an "Always On" connection is mitigated by ASL. You can use the phone as usual with the PPPoE connection active. I guess I don't see why you would want to connect/disconnect all the time.

he's probably worried about random (worms) traffic using up his bandwidth quota when no one's using the network.
I'm not sure if that'd make much of a difference though.

thanks for your outstanding suggestions.

I think it's not the problem to leave Astaro 'always on'.
But i have not a full flat, but a volume-based Internet Account with 2 GB of free Traffic each month.
To power off the modem isn't the right way. First of all, there is no switch, so i have to disconnect the power cable. On the other side, this is a SDSL-Modem. It took about 2 Minutes to synchronise. And German Telekom says, it's not a good idea to disconnect the Modem.

But i have another big problem.

Yesterday i've installed Astaro very fast on my Router-PC.
Everything works fine, i've set up on NIC to local Network with fix IP-Adress, the other was set up as PPPoE.

But if i set the NIC to 'green', it always says 'down' right beside the 'red/green' buttons, the light still stay 'green'.

So what's the reason, i can't get it 'up' ?

I've double checked username and pass. Everything is right.

How long after activating the connection did you wait ?

My ADSL sometimes takes quite a few minutes to "kick-in" once I've activated the connection.

I'd wait a few minutes then do a screen refresh and see if the link has come "UP".

is it possible to connect on demand ?

With other solutions (IP-Cop, Smoothwall) that's not possible. You have to connect (dial) manually if connected via PPPoE.

That would be a good workaround, because no one has to connect to ASL first.

nope that is incorrect with ipcop and smoothwall you can set it to dial on dns.  and then set a conneciton timeout so it will disconnect.  You do not have to dial manually in pppoe with those two(i am referring to smoothie 2.0 and ipcop 1.3 but i digress from the astaro usage of these forums)

i've recognized the problem, why my PPPoE-Interface isn't coming up.

In the logfiles i've found the following entry:
 pppoe-sh: DSL connection time shorter then 60 seconds (35 sec): Error? - wait 900 seconds 

After a reboot it is coming up and working.

But another question:

Is it possible to make several entries for my ISP ?
I have a volume rated account by german Telekom and another account from another ISP.

Is it possible to switch between the two accounts easily without editing the pppoe-settings manually ?

[/ QUOTE ]As you may have noticed by now, the Astaro Webadmin is not designed for having multiple WAN accounts and switching between them. The target market for ASL, is firewall routing for  local networks with 24x7 always on WAN links. You will have to dig into the underlying scripting to get ASL to do what you want.

You have a European home user type of broadband connection, which I, living in North America, find to be quite strange, as around here, all the household broadband connections are simply 24x7 always on connections, same as what you get with a  business broadband connection.

I've stated, that the 2 GB of my ISP are enough for me, and i don't have to switch the ISP twice a month.
So i can leave ASL running...

I think this will be fine for more than 1 ISP  AND
you can switch via GUI ! - I tried the Astaro, but -
for commercial use it's not free and IPCOP is ... : )
Here in Frankfurt/Germany I know more than 20
companies that use IPCOP for connection to our local
ISP ( ADSL/SDAL 1-3 Mbit ) "T-Com" and for connection
between other location with VLAN ...
