5GB HDD?

Can some please explain why a home user would need a 5GB HDD to run v5? I was planning to upgrade but there's no way I'm dumping my near silent 4GB laptop drive for v5. With the space I have I can easily drop any *nix distro in and do it myself.

    VelvetFog, it's not swapping. (I've looked at the graphs, as well as 'free' on console.)

    Also, like I said, it's only on my internal net right now while I'm testing v5, so no traffic is passing through it. Also, even if ALL the PC's are off, it still blinks every 3-4 secs. I see the same thing on my v3.

    Also, like I said, I've done tail -f *.log, so if it were logging packets, that would show them.

    I don't know what it's doing, but I would guess the ASL middleware is constantly accessing the disk.
    IIRC, I tried lsof but it was missing.

    Either way, I was just curious if other people are seeing such frequent disk activity or not.

    thanks for the site...

    lately I have seen (in addition to 4995 hits), also an increase in port 1025, 1026, and a couple more (can't remembre off the top of my head) hit increase...

    Well, you are dealing with a Linux machine. Any multitasking system will generate a fair amount of disk access. All one can do is try to minimize it, by providing enough RAM and keeping the logging to a minimum. If you want all the features working, then killing service processes is not an option.

    I don't really know how much my ASL box accesses the disk.  It sits on a shelf in a closet in my basement, along with the rest of my backend equipment, and I only go and visit it when I really have to.
