5GB HDD?

mainly because of the intense logging required for ICSA and other certs that ASL is getting certified for with v5.

The ASL v5 installation program ihas been programmed to refuse installation on a drive that is too small. I believe the limit is set for 6 GB.

I was seriously tempted to use Ghost to copy an ASL 5 installation from my 27GB drive back to the 4.3GB I was using before.
I suspect this would work as ASL is really only using 1GB of the disk.
I found a 10GB though so I probably won't bother.

BTW, is anyone having problems with their drives getting very hot in ASL?

I've currently got the 27GB (IBM DeathStar) on a test install of ASL 5, and (as usual) the disk activity LED is blinking every 3-4 seconds, and the drive gets very hot after a few days, and it is starting to reset itself (clunk, and spin back up). Naturally, I'm getting worried for it's health.

The computer is currently wide open, so it's not an issue of not enough airflow.

Also, as I'm still testing it, there is normally 0 network activity through this ASL box, so I don't see why it needs to talk to the HD every few seconds.

Obviously, the drive runs hot, but IMHO, ASL's constant disk activity is part of the problem.

My current ASL 3.x does the same thing, but it's got a 5400rpm drive, so (I believe) it's not getting as hot (haven't really checked it though).

tail -f /var/log/*.log
is NOT showing any activity most of the time, so I really have no idea what it's doing.

At work, our ASL box is a Dell PE350, which is FULL of fans.
I have no intention of running a leafblower like that at home though.

It is hard to find 5400RPM drives anymore.

Also, I was looking at some of the little VIA systems for ASL. The ones with multiple nics use a 2.5" drive. I wonder if they like being accessed all the time.

the deathstars are some of the hottest running drives in their segment..one of the reasons they fail so much among other reasons.  I have a 7200 rpm western digital in another firewall box that never spins down without issue in terms of reliability or excessive heat..7200 rpm drives get warm by nature however.  Deathstars are suicidal in their heat generation.

I agree, but I've got 2 deathstars (a 45 and a 60) in my PC, and it's been on with the case closed since December, and they are warm, but not hot.

The 27gb in ASL is hot to the touch, and seems to be distressed by it.

ISTM it is getting hotter than usual because of the constant disk activity, which I am curious about, esp on an idle ASL box.
It's not swapping, btw.

Oh well, I'll try this 10gb Maxtor (grimace).

DeskStars had a "contamination" issue, absolutely nothing to do with heat. Anyway, I hope the devs drop this silly HDD size limit and let the user decided how much space they want to devote to Astaro.

If you don't have enough RAM in the machine, then Linux will disk swap a lot, which increases the amount of disk drive activity.

Also, if you dont put in place the appropriate packet filter drop rules, then ASL is going to log drop a lot of stuff by default, which means that it writes lines to disk files for every packet that it drops. Look at your packet filter logs and your live filter log, and create packet filter drop rules that eliminates from the logs all the stuff that is routinely being log dropped. That should help reduce your disk traffic a fair bit.

Just out of curiosity, around how big should the daily packet filter log files should be?

I'm asking because I keep seeing a lot of info in these files (mainly of outside addresses trying to connect to port 4995, haven't figured out yet what this port is)...
