Problems with V5

My first install attemp of V5 was on a AMD K6 with 256MB memory, a machine I had been running V4 on for a while now.  The V5 install hung up while installing packages.  After a few more failed attempts, I moved Astaro V5 to a P2 400MHZ, 384MB machine.

The first time I booted off the disc (on P2 machine,) I had a kernal panic.  The second time it installed correctly and I was able to get to webadmin.  My first thought was that the webadmin interface was really slow.  Few more problems that made me reinstall V4:

-  The DHCP feature on my eth2 interface would not assign an IP.  The port is connected to my Toshiba cable modem.  This works on V4.

-  While inputing MACs and IPs into the mapping table in the DHCP server menu for the Internal netowrk,  the entire menu disappeared and I was NEVER able to get back to it, unless I ran a factory reset.

- While configuring, if I selected an option before the screen refreshed for the perviously selected option, I got a white screen and had to relogin.

So anyways, all is working well again on V4.021.  I'll be waiting a bit before trying again.

    My experiences with testing ASL v5 have been very similar.

    I find the web interface to be very slow. When I clicked on something too soon, before the web page had updated, I would get thrown out of my session, and forced to log in again.

    While I enjoy testing and reviewing new software, I have a very conservative approach to implementing software in a production environment. I am sticking with my ASL v4.021 setup until I am fully convinced that ASL v5 will offer me additional features without any sacrifice in reliability. I have downloaded and tested all the 4.7xx betas, plus the new 5.000 CD, but the new version of ASL is, in my view, still to slow and unstable to hold its own against ASL v4.

    Thanks for the view on v5...I was thinking about upgrading to v5 but after reading both of the posts I'm taking a "why try fixing it when it ain't broken" approach...I'll wait...

    Creating a totally new product can be a tricky business. Making many consecutive small improvements to an existing product is in many respects much easier.

    For Astaro, ASL v5 is basically an entirely new product. They have redesigned the entire Webadmin, and they have also put together a completely new build of the underlying open source packages that run on the Linux kernel. This is why so many things that were present and worked fine in v4 are now either missing, broken or somewhat dysfunctional in their v5 betas. They pretty well started over again from scratch. All of the configuration scripts for all the tasks are being reworked. Only the installation program appears to be the same as before.

    It is a gutsy desision to do a complete rebuild, and  when it all comes together, they will indeed have an improved product platform to face the competition with for the coming years.

    I simply think that they jumped to v5.000 to soon. I don't think  that what they have achived so far with their v4.7xx beta releases was good enough to call v5.000 just yet. The product is still in beta, in my view, and it remains rough around the edges.
