Hardware Requirements

I would suggest that you not use the machine that you described.

You may have problems installing ASL on an AMD K6 CPU. I could not get ASL to install on a K6 machine. Use an Athlon, Duron, Celeron or Pentium CPU based machine instead, and you'll be OK.  You will need 128 MB to 256 MB RAM For proper operation, 64 MB is barely enough, and will cause the Linux OS to use a lot of swap space. A 2 GB hard disk is too small. It might be possible to install ASL v4 on it, but there will be hardly any room left for the Squid web proxy file cache and for the log files. Use a hard drive with at least 6 GB.
    

Because there are only 4 Machines connected to the ASL-Box I planned to use Squid only for contentfiltering needs and not for caching, so this wouldn´t be the problem.
But what´s the matter with the K6? 

I don't know what is wrong with the AMD K6 CPU design, some of the problems are perhaps not in the chip itself, but in the supporting motherboard chipsets. However, the result is the same. I have so far identified several software packages that will not install on a K6 CPU. They are:

ASL v5
Windows XP
NetWare 6.0

These software packages will install on a K6:

NetWare 3.x, 4.x & 5.x
RedHat Linux 8 & 9
Solaris 9 for 386
Windows 95 & 98
Windows 2000
Windows 2003 server

I still have four machines with AMD K6-2/500 CPUs in them, so it is a nuisance for me that I can't use them as I please when it comes to installing new software.
       

try the latest ASL V5 beta (4.743) with K6 .. should work now...

I have downloaded the new 4.743 ISO file already, but I haven't yet burned the CD. I'll give it a go on my K6 box on the weekend, and let you know.  

I installed beta 4.743 on my AMD K6 machine last night, and the installation works fine now.

Gigabyte GA-5AA AT motherboard (ALi Aladdin V AGPset chipset).
AMD K6-2 500MHz, 256 MB RAM, 15 GB IDE HD.  

I'm about to install on a PII 128meg 3gig. Can I expect snappy performance? I expect to use all the features including vpn (net to net) and wireless access. I'll be using 1 wan NIC and 3 100meg internal networks.

The short answer is No.

A PII CPU is quite slow, and 128 MB RAM is not really enough, Linux will be using the swao partition a lot.
A 3 Gig hard disk is much too small. You need at least double that.  

While you could get by in a pinch with running ASL v4 for home use on such a modest setup, I wouldn't recommend installing ASL v5 on it

not really i run the betas on a p-2 350 with 196 megs and a 6 gig drive without problems.  I have run it on a 4.3 without issues...the exception being bugs in the betas..[:)]  The only time it swaps is for log processing and that is to be expected....the machine never exceeds 140 megs physical RAM usage under any circumstances. 

There is a thread that i started some time ago asking what is the smallest (lowest) hardware that astaro can run on.

4.0 originally required PII or higher. It was modified to go lower.

Fast forward. I have loaded and used it on a P 133 so have others.

K6 II-400 is more than enough processor for home use.

You may want to add more memory and possible hard disk space though, especially if you want to use vpn.

What the heck. Try and see what happens and then tell us how it went.

I'm just starting to use the thing in anger. i'm used to a fair bit more hand holding from my previous secutity solution, SmoothWall.

I doubt I'll be using VPN until my relative gets 512k access to the web  so perhaps I won't be swapping initially?

Anyway, all good fun!
