7 minute Filesystemcheck

When booting ASL the console says

VFS:Mounted root (ext2 filesystem)
Filesystemcheck running - please standby

then it takes over 7 minutes for the filesystemcheck to complete

1.  Is this normal?
2.  Is it checking for corrupt files or changed files because of a security breach/virus/trojan?
3.  Is there a way to disable this?

    also depends on the version of Astaro. Think they added DMA support a while ago. 7 Minutes seems to be too long but if the filesystem check found bad entries and has to repair something it would be O.K.  and of course as Matjaz said it depends also on the disksize.

    Thanks for the replies.

    Using 4.020 with 80Gig HD.  Don't see any errors about corrupt files.  The MB and HD support UDMA 100 and I see some messages about HD DMA mode but how do I verify what DMA mode it is using?

    Even though it is only using a small part of the 80Gig drive it has to scan the complete drive?  This sounds like a disk scan not just a corrupt file scan.

    As I said it is checking whole file system fo corruption!

    What about changing the partition sizes so that the unused space is in an unused partition?

    The 7 minute check sure puts a damper on a quick reboot after an Up2Date.

    to my knowledge ASL uses everything you give it..if you have an 80 gig drive all of it is partitioned for use by ASL..so if it detects a faulty shutdown..it must FSCK the entire disk..80 gigs will take a while no matter how fast the machine.

    [/ QUOTE ]Maybe this is my problem.  I am doing a normal shutdown/restart from within ALS.  I don't notice any errors on shutdown.  You are saying it should only do this on an abnormal shutdown like a power outage?

    He is saying it does it "hell or highwater" (an american idiom that means "always").

    You're going to have to roll up your sleeves with the mount tables and whatnot if you want to attempt to speed things up.

    Filesystems on Linux are the one area where there's plenty of room for improvement.

    (I'd wish by now that all the filesystem camps would get behind one index/journaling/transactional system, and have it integrated for all the apps...)

    yes only when it shutsdown abnormally should it do this....otherwise maybe something is not right with the system in terms of how it is shutting itself down.. on my mandrake file server the data drive is 80 gigs and it takes it about 5-7 minutes to fschk if it gets the power dropped on it..
