supportet mainboard chipsets

I would say you are good to go although I did see some "oops" posts related to that box and certain kernels.

doesn't take long to find out since the Install takes about 20 minutes tops. 

it will run red hat, but is the hardware also supportet from asl4?
i asked about it in the dell support forum, but it looks like nobody has ever set up asl on dells poweredge 600sc [:)]

it's important for me to know whether the hardware is supportet or not, cause i'll buy this server for use with asl4.

i hope anybody can tell me more about it.  

I too have an interest in this question as the Dell servers would work well for my needs. 

My understanding is that if its not in the HCL for asl then its not supported.
However, I am not associated with Astaro in any way other than being a satisfied home user.

For what its worth.. your Dell box runs RH8 and the DELL site claims LINUX support.  have you installed the product on another box to see how the process works?

And by the way. Just curious. Why are you  leaning toward DELL  box?

seems like overkill for a router.
Do you have a large number of clients?

I run a PII 400 w/ 192MB RAM to manage my  6 Mbit DSL connection and it is better than any LINKSYS or WINDOZE based solution in terms of speed and latency.

 

there's not really much information in the hcl about mainboardchipsets.

at this time i run astaro an a PIII 700 with 256MB RAM. there are about 100 clients with nearly 10GB download per day and the system, specially RAM and SWAP ist terribly overloaded for more than 20 hours when computing the accounting data. because of this i want to change the box.  

you are either going to need more ram(like a gig) a faster cpu..or hte easiest thing to do is reduce your logfiles..then you do not have to buy new hardware..[:)]

search for blocking ping logs,netbios logs, and broadcast logs..that will cut your logs down a fair amount
