overruns

hoi,

ftp und my dmz interface is quite slow and i found the following:

RX packets:1040 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:16 frame:0

what the hack are overruns? i already changed switches and cables, but error is still there... any hints?
using a 3com dual nic

Do you have DNS-Proxy enabled? Maybe your connection is slow because of a problem resolving Names/IPs.

Did you already try another NIC? Maybe the NIC is broken.

An overrun occurs when the data being transferred between the NIC and memory is not fast enough. The NIC writes to memory (usually a circular buffer; when it hits the end of the address range, it starts back at the beginning), and it is the CPU's job to interrupt and deque the packet data from the (limited) memory buffer designated for the NIC to a much larger system buffer. When the CPU or NIC lags, you get an overrun.

I am curious; does the #overruns increase with packet activity? Or does it plateau??

yes, it increases with activity. and only on one nic of my 3com dual...

maybe i have to replace the nic...

Sometimes it's the NIC, sometimes it's the way the NIC interacts with a particular PC, sometimes it's an interrupt configuration issue (especially if you are sharing interrupts).

You can see that it is not enough to have very fancy-schmancy features on a NIC! How a NIC will reliably interact with a machine's hardware architecture is vital to its performance. If you're using an Intel chipset with an Intel card, it's usually rock -not that many others out there are not...

mmh. i bought a new nic an installed it, working fine vor  1,5 weeks. after that on same configuration overruns still occur again...

any ideas?

Hi,
can you spend a little bit more information of your asl-box ?
CPU, memory, NIC, Interrupt-sharing, using of swap-memory, using of physical-memory using of CPU ?
These components are all in the chain of transporting data from one NIC-Interface to another.

the problem nic is a 3c980-TX, only the second port. even after replacing with a new one. this really drives me crazy...

Hi,
the only thing that i can see out of this is that your system seems to have not so much memory and it is swapping, have you ever tried to upgrade your memory ?

The CPU is not dequeuing the packets from memory quick enough, so the network card -overruns...
