Can't access the Internet at all.... (newbie)

Hey Guys,

I've read a pile of threads and posts and .pdf files, but I just can't get this setup to click for me, so any ideas if you can...

This is my first time installing and using ASL and I haven't quite gotten it to work right yet.  First, my setup:  P3-450 w/ 256 megs of RAM on a 10 gig HD.  I have 2 10/100 NICs in the system, both are recognized just fine.

Currently I have a cable modem with a non-static IP that feeds a Linksys 4 port Router that has a 16 port switch uplinked to it.  My goal is a simple one:  To eliminate my Lnksys Router and have my cable modem feed one NIC, and the second NIC attach to the 16 port switch so I have much better control of things in my LAN.

After installing ASL I only had 1 Network-> Interface.  (Internal on eth0 - 192.168.1.99/255.255.255.0)  I added a 2nd Interface (External on eth1 - 10.0.0.1/255.255.255.0)  How do I know what IP to use here?  Should this be my external IP?  (Dynamically assigned by my cable modem?)  I've seen a lot of 10.x.x.x IPs, is this just a rule of thumb, guaranteed to work on my end?

I've tried adding a rule under Packet Filter -> Any/Any/Any/Allow and that still hasn't granted me any access.

I can't ping anything externally, I can't resolve any host names, I can't even try to use Up2Date Service.  ("This Up2Date Server is emtpy or not available at the moment.")

I have a domain controller that currently acts as my DNS Server in my intranet, and yes, I've changed the settings on my TCP/IP Settings to hit my ASL server - no change.

I know it's something stupid and simple, but I have no clue where to start....

Any help would be greatly appreciated fellas...

    If your cable modem is DHCP capable (which many are), you will be setting your external network interface to get its IP and gateway by dynamic (not static) means; when you select dynamic, you will not have to enter an IP address for an entry...

    ... and once that NIC has an IP and is up and active I should be good to go with the settings I've mentioned?

    Well, your name resolution won't work unless you configure that domain controller's DNS to pass-off queries to the Internet -that's a Windows configuration issue. I know there are numerous articles on how to do it that a Search engine will readily locate.

    Make sure your ICMP and ping are enabled under the ICMP section; let's change that 'Any'  service rule to just two rules for HTTP and DNS only (to start):

         Internal =-->Any Allow

    If you want to see if it works, just use a DNS on the Internet, as opposed to the DC, to start.

    If that's still failing, post the results of your pings and traceroutes (sanitizing your IPs for privacy, if you prefer)

    Hello Magua...

    hmmm, your problem is may be country specific... my guess for your problem would be the wrong type of your Interface.

    Go to:
    Network->Interfaces

    And define your external eth1 with the following parameters:
    Name:  myexternal
    Hardware:  eht1
    Type:  PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE-DSL) connection
    Address:  assigned by remote
    Default Gateway:  assigned by remote
    Username:  (info from your ISP)
    Password:  (info from your ISP)

    Afterwards it should work... (if PPPoE is the connection type used by your ISP :-D ).

    Plug your cable modem into the networkcard that you wnat to use for the internet connection. Then set the IP address in the Network Configuration to DHCP, you may also need to set the netmask  and gateway to dhcp. reboot and everything sould be good to go.  
    you may also want to setup the dhcp server that comes with astaro so the you internal network can use dhcp so ou don't have to assign ip's to everything.

    I realize my DNS settings / servers will need to be changed for internal surfing and all that jazz - my main concern right now is that nothing gets out - I can't even run Up2Date!  (See my returned error in my initial post.)

    I'll try the DHCP thing, but my NIC said "Down" (with the green traffic light,) and I don't know why.  Is there a really long lapse time between getting NIC interfaces up and down?

    Is a reboot necessary?  I'll putz around some more when I get home, thanks guys, keep the suggestions coming!

    It sometimes helps to click on the interface's green light...
