su - doesn't work

Hi all,
I'Ve installed ASL 4.008.
My problem is, I can't su - from loginuser to root.
message is wrong password, but when I use "root" and same the password at the console is works.
Whats the problem? Can anybody help? Is there any parameter in /dec/login.defs?

One more idea: on one machine I have different kb layout than normally (using putty etc). So when I type a special character like # on the console, it comes from different position than usually. Could this be the case?

Could be; to test change your passwords to something simpler...
