New to Astaro, very simple ?

By the way I can ping the eth0 address, I just can't access the admin page on ie6.

I finally got logged in to the admin page but now I am having a hard time accessing the internet.  I think I am probably over my head.  I wish there was some documentation for new starts to set the basic configuration for a small home network.  I find the manual confusing.

This might get you started on the right track. It's still a good idea to read all the documentation though. 

Thanks for the link, but i still can't get past the firewall to the internet.  It pings to eth0 fine but I can't get out for some reason.  I guess I will keep reading and try it later.  I went back to  smoothwall for now.  

login via ssh to your astaro box and ping an external ip.   

you probably need to setup IP Masq.

Since you went back to smoothwall and can get out on the internet, download or print out that link I posted. It really helps for people who are brand new to astaro. 

O.k , with the example used on the link .  I am using a cable connection      without   static i.p.  I would not use the router in between the Astaro box and cable modem.   Would I set the eth1 to a I.P.static address? e.g. 192.168.0.42  Then set eth0 to 10.0.0.1 Next I set the client pc to 10.0.0.11 etc../netmask 255.255.255.0/gateway 10.0.0.1/dns server 10.0.0.1.  I am doing everything as stated in link and I still can't get on the internet.  I can ping the internal nic though.  Also I am using a crossover cable from  my client pc to the Astaro box.

Your link would have spared me one week of frustration. Why...  

this isn't as complicated as you are making it out.

1.  download the  manual.

2. read pages 93-99 up to the wireless section.

3. read page 125 the section on masquerading

4. have a look at packet filtering on page 147 (if you get lost add the rule: "any any any allow" just for testing)

5. Setup your external interface so that it gets an address from dhcp.  

6. plug that interface into your cable modem with a straight through cable.

7. turn your cable modem off and back on.

8. turn on DNS caching proxy

9. setup your internal interface with a static ip.

10. setup dhcp to serve addresses on that interface.

11. in the dhcp setup put your internal interfance as the first DNS server, and your ISP's DNS server as your second.

12. plug your computer your want to use to browse web pages with into the internal interface with a cross-over cable.

13.  setup that computer to get an ip address from dhcp.

14. create a packet filter rule that says "local_network any any allow".

That's all you should have to do.
