New to Astaro

Hi,  I'm a newbie to Astaro I've been programming Linux/Unix for 15 years, but I work for a telephone interconnect company that is a Toshiba dealer.  I will be setting up Voice over IP phones and voice over IP qsig lines.  I would like to use Astaro Routers and develop QOS settings for this.  Maybe even a hack to the Webadmin for it.  Can Astaro accept T1 PCI cards now or do I have to login to the linux box and start configuring there?

    Astaro does not presently accept a T-1 PCI card.  I asked about this during training, and after looking further into it I found out that the cost of a T-1 router PCI card is only a little less than a reasonably priced T-1 router, such as a Netopia R5300.  Having the T-1 router external to the firewall is also an advantage, because if your T-1 router goes south for some reason, you don't have to shut down the whole firewall to deal with it.  Sometimes, having too much wrapped up into one box can be a bad idea.  Even so, it might be interesting if Astaro would support a T-1 card -- I've seen them for about $850 new.

    Check recent posts... A user just stated they got a T1 PCI card working and is offering instructions...

    I hear ya, Simon, but I'd be hesitant to run that up in a commercial production environment -- who knows, one up2date could blow it away.  Hey, I guess I'm a little conservative about hacking around with deployed systems. :-)

    Recently, we had to interconnect two Panasonic KXTD-200 PBX over a Wireless LAN IP link. We fitted an E1-interface to each PBX, connected thos to an IPTube from Engage Communications which tunnel E1 over IP, even offering "compression". Then the IP frames were sent over a pair of Cisco Aironet 350 WLAN transceivers, where I assigned priority to voice frames which are marked by the IPTubes by setting the TOS byte to 0x08.

    In that application we did not fit any ASL firewalls, but they would make a good complement when sharing the wireless link with data, and for encapsulating all traffic into a VPN tunnel.

    So, I think IPTube devices might be a good alternative to having some PCI card in your ASL boxes. There is also a T1 version. There is a similar product from Telindus, but at almost double the price, and it does not offer any compression.
