Dual CPU support

with ASL 4.009 it was mentioned that "modern" dual CPU support has been added.  may anyone elaborate and define "modern"?

i have 4.009 on a dual P2-400MHz with 256MB RAM. in the past couple of days, the POP3 proxy has pushed CPU utilization through the roof.  i'm pegged at 98% (even after restarting the POP3 and SMTP proxies).

this seems a bit outrageous.  would DEFINITELY like to eliminate this issue, if it's possible, but do not want to lose virus scanning capability.

    doesn't mean that ASL runs with dual CPU, some boards need APIC support in

    oh right, thats a shame, thats very unclear that it does not support SMP.... have you any idea when it may be planned ?

    hopefully very soon as ASL WOULD benefit from the ability to offload tasks to a second CPU..How it can be said ASL cannot benefit from a second CPU is beyond me.

    Yeah. Give us Dual CPU usage so that we can run Snort on the other processor. Whoo Hoo. Sorry to bang the Snort drum again.

    ah well I am using SMP with Astaro, works well but would be nice to have SMP support, is there a reason why Astaro does not currently support SMP ?

    I think this  needs some clarification. At the end of the day, ASL is mainly a passive device...a Firewall and Service manager, not a raid-array data dump or processor intensive device. I've yet to see an installation of ASL take up all available the processing power of even a 2.0Ghz P4. With the price of processors and motherboards these days it itsnt a huge expense to upgrade if the need is there. On most occasions the boxes could indeed however, use more ram..but have only 128 or 256 megs This should be an ASL's first area of upgrade since that area results in the biggest performance gains at this time, such as moving to 512 or 1 gigabyte of memory.

    While there would no doubt be some benefits to adding this feature, there are other, more important features that are being focused on first, in order of ascertained importance.

    Well, the SMTP proxy can use an awful lot of CPU especially if you do a lot of key word scanning.

    It's pretty easy to cause Astaro to start spewing out CPU usage warnings...

    I would think implementing dual CPU support would be relatively easy ?

    I hate to press the point, but dual CPU support would not really help Astaro much.  If you are maxing out a 2 GHz CPU, then your network is very busy and load balancing and network planning would be a better allocation of time and funds.  It seems that some people simply want dual CPU support as they are using an old dual board that they acquired.  If you have a dual 400 MHz system, your effective processing power is roughly 600 MHz.  One could achieve much better throughput with an "old" 1 GHz system.  Set that up and utilize your dual system for something that would benefit from it.

    Just my two cents worth.
