Kernel doesn't boot after 4.008 update

Hello,

please note that this procedure might be nescesary if your machine
doesn't come up after the reboot (only)

Howto to switch per default enabled APIC support
in updated (not new installed) Astaro Security Linux 4.008.

1) 
When the boot prompt appears press TAB

Enter: default noapic acpi=off 

2)
If  the device is booting now, login as root
cd to /emergency/boot/etc open lilo.conf and append the following line:

append = "acpi=off"

3)

activate the new setting by typing

lilo -r /emergency/boot

4) reboot

I think it should be noted that there do seem to be some major problems with the kernel used in 4.008 and APIC enabled mobo's. I have one myself and ran in circles trying to figure out why only 1 NIC was dropping packets I finally found some LKM logs describing the exact problem I was seeing and mentioning APIC incompatibilities as the cause. Disabling APIC fixed it. I've read quite a few other posts dealing with similar issues after upgrading to 4.008 that I would guess could be solved by staying at 4.007 or turning APIC off in the BIOS.

We have reproduced this problem on several different machines, but in each case the kernel boots just fine. However, none of the NICs (all Realtek) pass any traffic through in any direction. Adding the boot command to turn off APIC fixes the problem.
