Router for Direct Connect Hub server (p2p service)

I host a server for the Direct Connect network on a 10Mbit line, but now i reached 700-800 users always connected to my server and my router (Cisco 2600) seems to be unable to handle so many connections.

Some one suggested me to use an old pc with a Astaro release, but i'm not sure if my old pc is going to be good enough.

I have a K6 500 with 128 MB ram and 13 GB HD: will it be able to handle at least 1000 connections? If not, what should i use?
And can i use a home licence for such purpose or do i have to purchase a commercial licence? I will have only one pc attached to the Astaro pc, and no need for VPN, Virus protection and such things. The only problem might be the number of connections....

    CPU and ram could be a bit better but it *should* work with that many connections.

    I'm peaking at about 500 connections at work and notice no speed issues. (On a PIII 500)

    Home licenses are 30 day evals.

    You should probably buy a base ASL license...
