Astaro v4 on Dell PowerEdge 2650 Server?

Isn't that kind of extreme overkill ?

Or do you have tons of these laying around so you could send me a couple ? [:)]

Astaro 4.007 and under does not support dual CPU.
Version 4.008 apparently does, but I have not tested this version yet on a dual CPU machine.

4.008 is supposed to support Adaptec I2O so if that's the flavour of Adaptec RAID you are using it *should* work.  Have you checked the HCL ?

Personally I'd use a fast single CPU machine 1-2GHz and 512MB RAM and a single 7200RPM HDD (Say 40GB) should be plenty for a LOT of connections.
 

Just to define the extreme overkill-ness of this,

We easily support 3 physical connections, 1 running GigE with 10+VLAN's and 4-5 ipsec tunnels on a single T1 on a Dell PowerEdge 350 with a P3 866, 256MB of RAM, and a 40GB 7200 rpm HDD. CPU may touch 20% when VPN traffic is pushing close to our T1's capacity. 

If I recall correctly, the PowerEdge 350's now have even faster CPU's, so a box like this would be WAY more than adequate for most networks. 

And just checking Dell's site, a 650 has been released to replace the 350 - continaing a single Celeron P4 or regular P4 CPU w/ IDE drives. Astaro ready for $1100 or less.

to give you some more facts about performance

- 25 MBit IPSEC 3DES throughput with a 700Mhz Celeron
   imagine the increase when using AES (about 3 times faster)

- line speed packet packet filtering withh 600 (100Mbit) rules worst 
  case matched

- and about 900 MBit packetfilter throughput with optimized mtu 
  using a certain type of NICs, don't want to marketing for others here [;)]

- handling easily 65000 connections, depending on the license

What else do you need?

Ok, your help cleared my mind, so I won't use a double processor (You guys convinced me about the waist of money because of doing this) and, what about SCSI RAID1 Array? do you recommend it vs. a simple SCSI HDD or it is going to be a waist of money too?

Unless you're serious about keeping logs, etc. (that's what syslog is for) There's little reason for redundant disks as long as you keep a spare. Astaro is mostly network I/O, with some CPU crunching for encryption. Disk access is mostly for HTTP Proxying and logging, and unless that .025 second load time difference within your browser is that important, you can probably save the cash.

Astaro restores quite easily (sans logs) if you email backups to yourself on a regular basis. It's quite easily to reinstall from CD, and then apply the backup file to get yourself back up and running.

Only caveat is (in my case) if you've modified the configuration files beyond what Webadmin provides. But that's solved by saving copies of those as welll.

Bottom line - save your money and go bare bones - or even better, go with a 650 class machine if you can get enough network ports in it (or can use VLAN's).

In my personal opinion a standard SCSI controller with a single harddriive would
be enough since Astaro Security Linux does not interact with the RAID controller.
You have optical and a acoustical signal from the controler but no notification about
if a HDD failure appears.
