External interface won't go up

Hi I've been trying off & on for weeks to install ASL 4.0 in a 2 NIC, PII 300MHz, 128MB, 8GB HDD PC.
I've tried the following NICs:
Realtek 8029AS
Realtek 8139D
3Com 3C590
3Com 3C905B-TX

The external interface simply won't go up.
Doesn't matter if I configure them for fixed IP or the required PPPoE.
I've read the Realtek NIC modules are a little buggy, but I get exactly the same result with the 3Coms.

I've been using Smoothwall for ages with no problems.
Astaro looks much better, but so far I can't even get it to work!

What am I doing wrong?

    Maybe a stupid question but did you hit the "activate" button on the left?  New interfaces aren't activated by default.  And of course the required info for PPPoE.  And it doesn't hurt to reset the DSL router just in case it is holding ARP for the last working NIC.
