ASL 4 with vmware

I don't understand why you would put ASL in VMware except for fun as it won't provide much protection.  But, have you given proper static IPs to each card and are sure you are hitting the right card?
I thought VM makes the card(s) appear as a Rhine (I think) which makes it a guess as to which is which when you have two.

VMware is happy running all kinds of servers (even NetWare) but as a firewall it seems over the top...

yes you are right, vmware is really NOT the platform to run a firewall in PRODUCTION environment,
but for TESTING and DEMONSTRATION purposes it's a cool thing to open your laptop and to show people an ASL demo

I hear you, good for demo.  Not sure if it would work since it really needs to be deep into the kernel.  But I'd be interested in knowing if it works.  You might try putting both cards on DHCP if you can and see if it works.

OT, I had a need to install and support Win2K Terminal Server (shudder) and it turned out that it works very well under VMWare on a Linux box.  Both servers work very well and stable.
  

Hi, Asl within vmware is my home configuration since 2 years

I have used all asl from 2.0 to 4.0 with no problem or with only marginal problem.

I use vmware because i have not a dedicated pc.

ASL in vmware works but i have seen the following problems.

1) Because there isn't a c compiler in asl (i haven't tried plus pack) you cannot install vmware tools.
So when you suspend and then resume vm virtual machine (i use it because it is much faster then shutdown/reboot asl), the time clock in asl go out of synchronization and this sometimes cause problems.
ASL use NTP protocol to resync time clock, but this happen only one times by day and only when asl time is near midnight.

2) Sometimes the asl box stop to respond, like if it were not more in net . Even a ping to asl ip fails. But if you log in (as root) directly to asl console (within vmware windows) and then you ping any ip in lan you obtain replies. And a few seconds after that, the ASL box becomes visible to all other machine as before.
This problem often happens after a resume from suspend with vmware 3
With vmware4 and asl4 until now i have seen it rarely.
I think it is due to clock out of sync after resume. 

3) Sometimes i experiment a 10-15% of packet loss.
15% of packets that cross throught asl go lost.
I have not understood the real reason (packet drops by asl or other) but i think it is due to clock out of sync after resume.
Because this happens when asl time clock is many hours or days behind real time because it comes from a resume after few hours or days.
When this happens a reboot of asl box fix the problem.

I would say that your problem is more likely to be the networks you put your "ASL VM Machine" on. You need to be on the network you type in during the setup and RTFM on the VMWare networks also.
