Shutdown problem

I wanted to shutdown my system to install more memory (64Mb-> 128Mb).

I logged in as root on the console and issued:

shutdown now

It started shutdown processing, but when it got to:

Starting Up2date Recovery Cleanup
-> OK

It hung and went no further.

I powered down, installed the memory and powered up.

Is there some log I should check to see why it hung????

i have the same problem when i shutdown via console it stops at starting up2date recovery cleaning and not goes further.

Or rather, it ended with a message:

Power down

RedHat 9.0 on an identical system is able to complete the power off step. But maybe this is a new hardware feature that is not in your kernel.

correct, ACPI powerdown is not included in the kernel.. (auto poweroff might kill some important information on the screen after a powerdown...)
