Wireless Support

Hi 6square9 !
I'm just as helpless as you are, but:
   - read the HCL one more time - there is a section which lists the chipsets that have to be on the PCI / PCMCIA adapter
   - I'm using the D-Link DWL-500 (looks good to me - even recognised by the system)
   - inserted the DWL-650 - still looking good (able to get card identifyer displayed by ASL)
But at the very end - can't get the access-point to work !!! - shame on me  [:$]

Thanks for the post.  I now see the chipset section.  Which DWL650 are you using?  The + version no longer uses the Prism2.  Might be worth checking out.

I found a DWL 500 on eBay  DWL500 

I hope this one works.  Thanks again for the reply.

The more I study this area, the less I believe it advisable to have the wireless interface in the firewall.  Better to put a regular LAN card and a cross-over cable to a regular AP.

If you put the wireless card in your firewall, you either have to operate in AdHoc mode or you have to have full AP support.

The former is not really efficient if you have more than 2 wireless stations.  Plus anyone who is following 802.11i will understand the security issues around AdHoc.

The later means you are still not protecting the MAC layer.  Will you get 802.1x/aa support in the firewall? 

 I really do not feel comfortable anymore with this approach.

And APs are sooooo inexpensive these days.

Finally there is antenna placement concerns.  Is your firewall location the best for your wireless antenna?

See, there is always something else - you just have to know where to look !!
I'm using the DWL-650 (as recommended) - the "+" is using a different chipset (as you supposed).
If you are going to buy it - check the price !! I've got myself the set (DWL-500 plus DWL-650) for € 47,- plus shipping.
If you get this "off the ground", please let me know -

Bob M you are probably right in your assessment concerning the security implications in having the wireless interface integrated into the firewall.

I have been playing with Astaro for the past few months, and I want to see the wireless piece work.  As with other Astaro features, if the wireless option does not apply to what I want to do I will turn it off.

I have ordered the DWL-500 off of Ebay and can’t wait to try and get it working.   I only have one WAP in my house so I think it will be interesting if I can replace my Linksys.  (By the way I hope Cisco straightens out Linksys.  They have serious firmware issues with new products, but that is for another forum)

As for a secure wireless solution I have implemented LEAP at work, using TACACS+, dynamic rotating keys for WEP, no SSID broadcasting, MAC filtering and MIC flipping.  The only thing better would be to use IPSEC and tunnel the traffic.
