network problems?

Our ASL have five NIC's. (2x3C905-TX, 1xIntel EtherPro 100, 2xRealtek). After having some problems where the firewall was unaccessible for a few seconds aproximately every 15th minute, we decided to try and replace the realtek cards with intels identical to the one we already had. As the realtek driver doesn't exactly have a good reputation, we figured it was worth a try.

I replaced the cards today, and now the problem is even worse. The box goes totally dead for aprox 3 minutes every 5th, then come back online for another 5..

Any ideas?

It's a pentium 3 1GHz with 1 gig ram. /proc/loadavg and /proc/meminfo doesn't show anything special before the net disappear.  The net-drivers are e100 and 3c59x.

Why isn't dmesg, uptime, top, free etc included in ASL btw?

    What kind of box is that really ?? Desktop-PC ?
    I don't think that trhe problem is driver related...because many others use those cards aswell.
    I think your problem has something to do with too less power (powersupply-related)...
    How much Watts does your "PS" have ?
    Had such Problem with a Windows based system earlier.
    Maybe try with less cards first.

    It's a self-buildt one in a rack cabinet. Don't remember the info about the PSU, as I didn't build it.  But disks and the CPU would break down before the PCI-cards, so I don't think it's that either.

    It had 5 NIC's earlier too, without these massive problems..

    The new Intel NICs only use 250mA, while a simple ide disk easily pull 3-4A.. I really think the disks would have felt it too if it was too little juice there.

    in my case the cpu and disks didnt "break-down",
    indeed my PCI-Cards went crazy. (working and not...packetloss..etc)
    Its just an idea...

    And just upgrading the PSU made the packetloss go away?  Also a Pentium III ? I'll kiss the ground you walk on if you're right, but I need to be sure before I get the people who are actually on-site to do this.

    It was a P4...i removed one card of the 4 i had in there which was unuded , and probs were gone.
    Btw it was a Board with VIA chipset.

    Ok, I think the P4 pulled a lot more than my little P3, but I'll get the people who are on-site to check the size on the PSU and yank the CD-ROM from it just in case. Thanks for the tip  [:)] )

    One other thing to check on the boot-up messages is that each NIC is getting it's own IRQ, or that they can actually share resources.

    I've had intermittent problems like this before when some of the peripherals wouldn't share motherboard resources on a normal (non-server) motherboard. Also, the bios may require "Plug'n'Play" disabled so the motherboard then allocates resources. Further, you need to be aware that on most boards, the pci slot next to the agp shares the same resources as the agp slot, and the others also can share same IRQ, i.e, the second and fifth may share, as well as the third and sixth, etc, etc.

    That is well possible. I had have a similar problem as I used a Mainboard with prommis chip.
