According to a port list I downloaded:

1900/udp ssdp SSDP
1900/tcp ssdp SSDP

I believe SSDP stands for Simple Services Discovery Protocol.  Read about it here:  http://pwg.org/hypermail/ipp/2415.html.

I understand it's been implemented in Win XP, although I don't own XP & can't vouch for that.

I think NIM stands for Network Information Management, but that's about all the light I can shed on it.

I'm no expert on ports or services by any means & would welcome anyone who knows what they're talking about jumping in on this.  Meanwhile, maybe this will give you a place to start.

That port is used by uPNP. I had uPNP turned on in my Linksys router and was getting hammered by these denied packets on the external interface of my ASL. I shut it off and it went away. If you're using WinXP, search for uPNP and possibly disable it.

Thanx for the replys and I will try to install the microsoft patch to the machine doing this tonight and hopefully it will go away. I have 2 XP machines on the network and only one is diong this but I'm sure that it has not been updated in a long time and the machine not diong this has been so I can only assume so far that this may be the case.

I will try it and repost to let all know what I find out.

its not only upnp, its also the ssdp discovery service.

On your XP machine, go into control panel->administrative tools->services. 
find both upnp and ssdp. set their startup type to 'disabled' and stop them if they are running.
