Hard Drive Size

Well what's the real story on hard drive size?  The website says 8GB minimum... I hear of people here using ~2.5GB hard drives and everything is just fine.  I have the latest build... 3.2 something.  I'm running a small home network with 3 workstations that do nothing heavy really.  I will probably be using the VPN some and have to setup some rules... not real sure.  With such a small environment, is something like 4.3GB plenty?  With what I gather, it would.

Is there some DYNAMIC breakdown of what you need depending on your scenario?  It really appears that for those who are running a small home network that the requirements posted on the website are not really what is needed.

(planned system - Celeron 400Mhz / 192MB RAM / 4.3 GB HD -- small 3 workstation home network).

    IMHO, 4.3 is plenty for home use.

    I have a small network going with about 30 computers in the internal and DMZ networks with VPN on a 2.5 GB drive with the socks and http proxies going without a problem, the partitions are not even half full, the max is about 32% even.  Astaro has done a very nice job of making their product scalable to the smaller hard drives.   [:)]

    This brings up something that I have frequently wondered about...

    Are there any tools to see how the drive is partitioned, for what purpose, and how full each is?

    Other than DF and other Unixy commands?

    I'm glad to hear it works out well for the smaller drives considering a smaller network.  I was kindof assuming their minimum requirements were a bit more geared towards a larger, more corporate sized network.

    I'm using Astaro on a home network with 5 PC's. Not all of them are on at the same time. Astaro works great with a 6.4Gig drive. I did have to play around with the right memory size. I was getting HD swapping after about 5 days with 256meg of memory. I added 128 meg more and things seem to run swap free for more than 20 days now. Seems that Astaro likes more than 256meg of memory to run without swapping.

    Well ... it just depends on which of ASLs services you like to use.
    If you dont care about HTTP Proxie, etc. and just use astaro as a comfortable packet filter and VPN Client, 4.3GB is more than enough.
