linksys wireless router and astaro

Hello,
I have a linksys wireless router that i want to built into my network.  Linksys assigns 2 separate sets of IPS for wireless and wired and I would like to use it as basically my DMZ network.  Anyone connected on wireless would have to VPN into my protected network to get any access.  

Does this make sense and is this possible?  Would it make sense to connect my DSL modem thtough the linksys box or should I use another interface on Astaro box.

    I have already spoken out that wireless should be on its own interface.  I have said it here, and I will be saying it in my upcoming column in Network Computing Magazine (column just went through final proofing).

    The two addresses are there for minimual protection of the AP itself, having nothing to do with its function as a simple 802.1 spanning tree bridge.

    Thus the segment that you install the AP on is open to things like classic ARP poison attacks.

    thanks for your reply as well as your previous posts which I found helpful.  And I am looking forward to reading your column.  Also I apologize for asking such a poor question - it was late I was excited to have astaro running.  

    So I read your post on using linksys to connect to DSL modem and setting astaro as the DMZ on linksys.  Which makes sense.  I however want to take that further.  Primarally I want to use Astaro's great reporting tools to view the usage on my wireless subnet. 

    I was wondering if I can have 3 nics set up this way:
    eth0 ->  LAN 192.168.....
    eth1 ->  LAN 10.10.  (connected to linksys)
    eth2 ->  DSL Modem

    This way I can keep my LAN (192) protected from the wireless network\, which I sahre with my neighboors.  As well as let me monitor my neighboors usage of the internet.

    The question i have is with setting up eth1, I imagine I would connect that to the WAN port on linksys, correct?  I am also thinking that I would have to mess with the Dynamic/Static routing on the linksys menu.  I am particularly curious about the (Gateway/Router) radio buttons.  It seems like it would be related.

    Does anyone have the setup I am speaking of?  It seems that a lot of people might want to especially to get wireless network going, if not I would love to put together a HOWTO based on what I learn.

    Hum, Roman,

    Whcih Linksys do you have?  Just a plain wireless or a Wireless/DSL?

    You connect your Linksys's ethernet to the firewall.  If this is a Linksys DSL, you do not hookup the DSL and just ignore all of that, as the Linksys is acting link a Hub/bridge.

    I have YET to see one of the DSL/wired/wireless units NOT put both the wired and wireless on the same layer 2 segment.  That is the 'cheap' way.  Also, few users would know how to get Netbios working in a routed environment.

    This is a wireless routet and you are abosuletely correct  [:)].  

    I have linksys hooked into 1 nic on asl, my private lan on another, and DSL modem into 3rd. I am ignoring all linksys settings and WAN port, have even turned off linksys DHCP.  I am running ASL's DHCP on that network and all wireless machines are getting the right info.  I suppose I should sell by router on ebay and buy an access point to get a few bucks back.

    Since I got astaro working my web pages download what seems like considerably faster - ie: no wait time to browse like it should be.  I think this is mostly squids doing, though i don't undersatand why it still seems to work on uncached sites, though I am not complaining.

    Is there a good way to measure my up and down speeds on DSL besides using something like a dslreports.com tool?

    First get the AP and either a cross-over cable or a hub, THEN sell the Linksys wireless router  [:)] 

    BTW, I recently got a D-Link DWL-1000AP, and I am not happy with it.  Too dumb, as is D-Link tech support.  They include an antenna adapter, but I cannot find out what type it is to get a booster antenna, and their tech support state that they do not supply any adapter....

    I have never done any performance testing of my DSL link, so I do not know of any sources.  I would go to my friends over at NLANR in San Diego and ask them (KC, would probably give me something to run against her rigs, but hey, we're old friends), but I just am not motiviated to do this.  

    maybe I should start with dslreports.com myself...
