Promise Raid

Hi there,

I would like to install ASL v3 on a machine
with a promise raid controller ... but the
installation routine detects two hdds, instead
of one raid1 logical drive and stops installation.

Any hint for installing it on a raid1?

    Hi,

    as far as I know there is no promise raid code in not even Linus latest kernel. Only code available is to use the controller as a 'normal' IDE Controller. Maybe you can get something from Promise (Driver) so you can modify your kernel.

    Doesn't work.

    It's not supported.
    A tweak that I did was to install with one drive and then add an empty drive and tell the controller (in controller bios) to replicate the first drive to the second.

    Hi,

    that was the way I got it too work too,
    mirroing the drives in bios ... but the
    kernel is still using the controller in
    single-disk mode. So my 2nd drive is useless.

    I would really like to have the promise
    RAID (!) support in a  near version.

    Any feedbeck from astaro at this point?

    There's a few dedicated Mirror solutions for IDE disks.. the one that I use for our Domain Controller at work, is called an ARAID66

    They're cheap.. 200$ CDN.  work VERY well.. and show up as a single hard drive to the computer's bios.. so no driver issues at all under Linux (we've had the ARaid hooked up to a linux box..  The thing takes up two 5 1/4" slots.. and it has it's own removable tray.

    Hope this helps in your quest for HDD redundancy!

    Hi Fazil,

    thanks for your post ... but no go in my case,
    because we are building 1U rackmount systems,
    and the promise controllers comes with the board
    we are using.

    Native promise raid support would be perfect  [:)]

    Hi all,

    we are evaluating this possibility now. Maybe we'll include the Promise RAID support, but I'm skeptic about it... The problem is the absence of an open-source driver for Promise (the linux native one in not _really_ a hardware RAID driver, it's only a "software-workaround" to provide disk-side compatibility with other OSes living on the disk...)

    Another controller that is used alot on motherboard that  does seem to have good linux support is the Highpoint controller.

    The Promise and the Highpoint controller are not really hardware raid controller. They use the CPU for creating a RAID-System. Only at Boot-Time the internal BIOS make it able to boot from the RAID-Array. Afterwards all Systems needs Software to use the RAID-Array.

    So it is a Software-Raid masqued by a BIOS. Linux supports Software-RAID by it´s own, so why you do not use that? Use the Promise-Controller as a simply IDE-Controller and enable the SOftware-RAID-Support. Works fine on my one SuSE-System at home.
