why different numbers for default gateway and NIC address on internal network

the default gateway of the ASL box should be the IP of your router. the ip ASL lets you enter is the IP of the internal lan-interface. this IP is the default gateway for the clients.

ex:

router:
int IP 192.168.1.254

ASL-box:
internal 192.168.2.254
external 192.168.1.1
default gateway 192.168.1.254

Clients:
eth0 192.168.2.10
default gateway 192.168.2.254

thanks for the reply.

My situation after install:

ASL box:
internal NIC 192.168.2.100
default gateway: X.Y.Z.100 (our current public LAN router to internet)

To test, I have linked a PC to the ASL box internal NIC using crossover ethernet cable and set the PCs IP number to 192.168.2.37 and its gateway to the ASL boxes internal card IP 192.168.2.100

On my understanding I should at least be able to ping the ASL box from the PC, e.g.

192.168.2.37 -> 192.168.2.100

but I get no response.

I also get no response from pointing a web browser on the PC to the ASL box.


There seems to be no way of doing any other configuring except with a web browser from the internal network so I'm currently completely stuck  [:(] 

 any ideas?

What rules do you have setup in the ASL.  By default no http traffic will be allowed through without a rule.  Secondly you may not be able to ping the ASL as there are settings that control pinging the ASL and allow ping through the firewall.

Hi Craig,

 I've done no configuration other than what you can do during install, i.e. set up the internal network card and default gateway.

It seems to be that you cannot do any other configuration beyond that until you can access the web interface.

From my understanding the only way to access the web interface is from a machine on your private network.

So by my reasoning you must be able to at least make a connection to the ASL box from you private network after installation or how else can you configure the ASL box?

maybe check your typo.
Did you really do https ??
Example https://192.168.2.100

Also check your Crossover-Cable.
Are you absolutely sure, that it is OK?
You can often see a LED on the NIC called 'Link' or '10/100
 when the connection is fine.

1) did you checked the netmasks ?
2) did you checked the right interface ?
3) different speed ? Mode ?
4) check 'arp -a' on the client ? ARP entries ?
5) HTTP-Proxy enabled on the cleint ?

My question is similar when you install it asks for a IP, NetMask, and Gateway. Thats the internal Nic. then when you start to install the outside you set the same.

What is the Internal Nic's Gateway supposed to be?

The ip of the external Nic?

you've only set the one default gateway (extern nic).

All routing for the internal nic's is set automatically by asl.
