Public IP Address Problem

hi,

normally you won't be able to access your fw from the untrusted side with ping or ssh, because ssh is turned off by default and ping isn't working bacause all packets coming from external are being dropped as long no ALLOW-rules are applied.
remember to activate MASQUERADING when trying to connect from internal -> external ...

    I have a bit of a problem that I was hoping someone here might be able to shed some light on.  

    I have installed and done all the setup that I /think/ is necessary to get my box up an running.  Everything seems fine so far on the internal side, I can connect to the box via private IP with no problems at all.  My problem is that I get no response at all from the public side when I attempt to ping or SSH into it from a IP on the public side of things.

    The public nic card (a Netgear FA311) seems to be working fine.  I know the jack that I am on and IP address that I am using is clean (Works fine when I drop a laptop into the Security Box's jack and configure it with the same public IP.  I am also unable to ping from the security box to any public addresses, though again, it works fine on the private side.

    Is there somthing I am missing?  Are there any configuration settings that would have to be present there for the box to recognize Public traffic?  Any help would be appreciated.
