installing asl on a cobalt raq 4 (i/r)

hi there,
i want to install the latest image 2.016 for cobalts on one of our raqs (we have raq4/raq4i/raq4r) but i didn´t sucess on any of it. all i see in the display is "loading kernel" for above 5 minutes (then i gave up) and that means that the image couldn´t be installed (i knew this cause i have installed a lot of images in the past). 

in the wide wide internet i found on the cobalt sites that the 2.016 package is only for raq 3 machines. 
here on the board i read that i need to install the flash rom update (for which machines? 3 or 4?), btw. after downloading this update i am unable to unpack it, it seems to be corrupt  [:(] 
can i download it from the cobalt site too? which version? 

i always install the images with another pc connected with a crossover cable. all i can see on my monitor booting the asl image is the license, in which you have to type "y" for accepting. then i got the "loading kernel" on the raq display. 

any ideas? or must i buy another raq 3 for it?
