Constant Hard drive activity

I wonder if someone could give me a pointer here.  I have just installed ASL (frankly, without much success) and am not able to ping it from anywhere, not anything from it.  However, my question is regarding the constant hard drive activity that I am seeing.  It is not passing any traffic, so I am at a bit of a loss as to the need for so much activity, like doing a constant search for something.
Additionally, with mult. NICs, now is it possible to find out which port is assigned to which interface, i.e., which is assigned eth0, 1, .

    you must provide more details, HW, ASL Version. but I would say that your Harware is to slow, or you need much more RAM.

    The NIC Problem: it's the only NIC you can connect to ASL, so no problem. And mostly- I think - it's the NIC in PCI-Slot 0.
