Need advice on up2date error

On performing my first up2date, 7 updates (each with *.tar.gpg filename formats) successfully came down, but on restart I got the message:

"gpg: uncompressing failed: unknown compress algorithm"

... and the up2date has effectively hung our firewall now.

What gives?

    try to press CTRL+C if the boot process reaches
    the up2date check to interrupt it.
    Now delete all up2date files you find in /var/recovery/incoming
    and restart the up2date service
