maximum traffic

Hi Everyone,
I am having a problem when a lot of traffic is going through the firewall. This happens when a backup is run. One side of the firewall goes down and the logs say NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out. Would it help to upgrade the machine presently celeron 333 128mb.

Any Ideas?
