Minimum system

I'm going to try installing Astaro on a spare system at home.  I'm trying to build a Linux network at home to prove the concept of Application servers with low end PC's (the ones that bussinesses are currently throwing away).  I've got several systems and I want to know which will work and how much hardware I really need:

Dual P233, 128MB ram
Celeron 266, 128MB ram
Pentium Pro 200, 80MB ram

I have few hard drives - ranging in size from 1.7GB to 10 GB.  How much hard drive space do I need?

I'm going to be running about 12 computers total including 1 Win 2000 box.  I've got a Cable modem to the outside world.

There is a difference between stated minimums (Windows 95 could boot with 4MB but no one in their right mind would consider using it at less than 16 when it first came out) and actually usable machines.

Also, how many different kind of NIC's are supported?  Is there a list somewhere of what works with what?  I've got some 3Com (ISA), DLink (PCI) and IBM (ISA) cards.

    Most of your questions have also been answered in this forum.

    But for my experience:
    For a small network i also used once a P266 with 128MB RAM.
    But think about what you want do do with it.
    If you only want to have some filter rules, it should be no problem.
    If you want to use several proxies (especially SMTP) and VPN features, you really should have a good machine.

    For a first test, these machines should be enough. Installing ASL is so fast, that it is also no problem to change the hardware (after saving the configuration)   [:)]

    David, I would go with the celeron. Use 3com cards if you can. If you are going to use any of the proxies, you would like all the disk you can get in it.

    I have ASL 2.x running on a Pentium 200MMX, 192Mb RAM with a 6Gb harddisk. I use it for my home network which is about 4-5 workstations and servers. All on a 1Mbit SDSL link.
    Cpu runs average at about 15%, so if I add the smtp proxy I may have to switch to different hardware

    Thanks for the direct response!  I may be able to put the 4GB drive on the system or at least a 2GB and 1.7GB drive.  I was thinking of the Pentium Pro - it has a larger cache (256k) and if I remember right, is better tuned to 32bit operation.  But you think the Celeron (at 266MHz) would be better?  Come to think of it, the Celeron would probably be better because I think it has more free interrupts - I could not add a sound card to the PPro because of lack of interrupts.

    Should I try to use two of the same cards or two different brands?
