Installation Error

I know it sounds funny, but since many people have reported strangenesses with the KB layout....

Did you try any other keyboard than US American ?

I have had the same errors, using the US keyboard.  I did not try any other keyboards.

System Info

Dual PII 400
1 GB RAM
1 EIDE hard drive IDE host 1
1 EIDE CD-ROM IDE host 2
2 3Com NICs

incredible ... we are not able to reproduce the strange things happening when US keyboard layout is selected.

We simply do not get this error on ANY of our test systems.

kmm1081: please use the german KB layout too. some hints:

 - Y and Z are swapped
 - @ is produced by left ALT+CTRL+Q (or ALTGr+Q)

Could you guys tell me what kinds of keyboards you use ?

Yes, Im getting the same error with a US Keyboard...just wanted to let u all know that you are not the only ones getting this error...have not yet tried the other KB Layout...but will in a min...

I'm installing on a PII 266 system. I'm using a MS Natural Internet Keyboard connected through a Belkin KVM switch. I have the same problem when I choose US Keyboard. If I choose German it works fine.

i dont think this is in error in the keyboard driver anyway....
After the selecting of the keyboard the selected driver will be loaded immediatley from the CDROM. 
For some drivers the CDROM access works for other not. Perhaps it doesnt work because of a "bad" CD drive, "bad" burned CD, "bad" IDE timing and so on...
We are still not able to reproduce this, but the reported error from Nils is a IDE driver message. So lets collect more data about your CD drive, IDE settings, BIOS versions ....

Well, I'm actually using a Yamaha 4416 CDRW as the CD-ROM - it stopped writing CDs a while back, and was the only CD-ROM drive available... I didn't do anything with the IDE settings.

BTW, now that it's installed and running (very well), how do I switch the keyboard setting back to US? I'm having a hard time adjusting to the "qwertz" keyboard... anyone know where the "|" key is?

I am also having a problem trying to install 2.0 after choosing US keyboard Layout.I have made multiple cd's, downloaded
the ISO image serveral times (Even from the mirror site). Still the same problem on two
different machines.The install does continue
if I choose German layout.I have a 1.8
image, It works fine.

I am using the PIII Optiplex 1 Dell Machine with 4GB SCSI and Adaptec 2940 card with default settings. When I boot the machine with the ASTARO CD inside, I am getting the below mentioned error and the installation stops. Tried different options but of no use.

I was happy to find this thread as well as the hint of trying the German keyboard-layout.

My problems were exectly like those Nils' described, the error message the same (just that it kept repeating for some 6-8 times before throwing me into the bash shell), and upon trying to exit the shell the whole installation process hung.

However, this only happened when I chose US keyboard layout. German seems to work a charm, and I am installing the system as this is written (on another computer  [:)]

The computer on which I am installing Astaro is a Duron 1GHz custom-made one, with an IDE harddrive and an ATAPI CD-ROM. I guess the problems are related to the IDE-driver, but it seems weird that the problems only occur when selecting US keyboard? It sounds even more strange when the Astaro guys are not able to replicate the errors on their own computers.

(BTW: I wrote the image on my home computer, and tried booting from the image to check it out. This beeing a very "standard" computer with PIII-800 and a large IDE drive, the problems were the same - as the computer seemed to hang at another stage with the "tried to kill init" message. I did not try to start that computer with other than US keyboard settings.)

I hope this can be of some help in solving the problem. The ISO-image was based on Astaro 2.0 downloaded yesterday.

I guess I should also mention:
1) I checked the MD-5 signature of the ISO file. It matches the one given on the Astaro web page

2) I wrote the image using Nero and following the exact instructions given on the web page

3) To me it seems like problems with the image may be responsible for this error, as the drive tries to search outside the written area of the CD

Could it be that the US keyboard driver should have resided in an area of the disc that is not included in the image?  [:S] 

Or could it be that one should choose to close the disc (by checking that box in the burn software that says something about "doing so, you may not write further data to the disc)?   [:S]

hi guys,
i also get the same error after choosing the us keyboard layout. but when i choose the german keyboard layout everything's a ok.
i have an ide cdrom drive connected to the secondary controller. it is also set as master on that controller. actually im using vmware which uses an award/phoenix bios. i just downloaded the image today from www.astaro.com.  i haven't tried putting the cdrom drive as a slave on the primary ide controller though... maybe i'll try that and see if i still get the same error

I have had this problem with the last two versions of the ISO I have burnt (1.8 and 2.1) - I found in both cases that burning the cd at a lower speed, 1x-2x, fixed the issue - I don't think it has anything to do with your hardware so don't bother changing keyboards and drivers etc....

I burnt the cd at a lower speed , 1x-2x. It don't fixed the issue. I downloaded the ISO from two FTPDs.

I my occasion i downloaded ASL 2.0, burned with Nero, in 2x speed (Yamaha 2100 cdrw, in an USB box).
When i select US Layout, program rapidly exits and the bash prompt appears...

I will try to re-download from home, and burn it on my Plextor 16-10-40A, to check if there is a different behaviour..

You should include in FAQ the keystroke which produces @ character in a non german keyboard ..(Alt 64)

tried burning image using xcdroast.
strangely enough choosing english keyboard layout works. but when i try installing on vmware it says it can't find the MBR on the CD. but with the one i burnt using NERO i can boot the CD. anyway hope this helps

I burned the image using Nero without having any problems in booting from the CD afterwards.

I don't think that using some other program during the burn process will solve this problem. Neither changing the speed when writing the disc. I have tried writing at 4x, but then the program reported the error during the writing process. However, when writing at 2x the program reported no errors. The CD booted with no problems at all, but has the "usual" problem if one selects the US keyboard layout.

hi folks,
actually there's no problem with booting from the CD when using nero to burn the image. the problem that occurs is when choosing the keyboard layout. when choosing the us version it drops you to a shell. but when using xcdroast to burn the image  i can boot from the cd and at the same time choose us keyboard and then asl successfully installs with us keyboard layout
