ADSL on Astaro. Please Help !!

It´s a pity, Astaro´s ASL is a great product but it seem that the company lacks commercial savvy. Imagine you never know when features which potential customers are begging for since Jan/2000 will be implemented !! I read tons of messages asking for DHCP client and  PPPOE support both necessary for now popular ADSL connections. Astaro answers such  pleas with "Wait", "we don´t know....", etc. Come on guys you have a GREAT product I can´t belive it´s so dificult to slip in these features in version 2.0 or maybe you can publish hacks to ASL that permit such features. I´m willing to write and mentain How-tos on the subject.


PS. I have spent the past 3 days trying to hack a DHCP client and PPPOE into astaro with out much success. (I keep losing the ADSL link). I´m fustrated !!

trust us, we are very aware of the commercial requirements for our firewall distribution (especially our sales team is VERY aware, as you might have guessed ..).

While it is relatively easy to "hack" DHCP and PPoE support into the present system for a small subset of possible configurations, it is a bit harder to integrate it in a commercial, supported, clean way.

We see ASL as a commercial grade solution, and as such we cannot just hack something together and push it out.

We are constantly walking the thin line between commercial reliability/stableness and "bleeding-edge" (uhm ..) featurism and "hacking" mentality. This is not always easy, as you see  [:)]

But to be constructive: DHCP support is NOT in 2.0, but will be in a feature Up2Date for it, and it is on our plan as a "much wanted feature" (not only from UBB readers).

You can expect something before the end of the year.

I guess I´ll just have to wait for the promised Up2Date !! Untill then, I´ll just have to get myself an ADSL Router, probably a 3Com ADSL Router 812. (Hope ASL works with it ?? )

It's a shame, you've been saying that you'll provide DHCP support since 1.7 I think. I keep checking every few months in the hope that you'll have it sorted out but it's STILL not in 2.0 and we have to wait for an up2date and I'm not all together sure that we'll even get it then!

It looks like a great product guys but it's pretty useless to me until you get that sorted...  [:)]

Somehow, I get the feeling that ASL is a product aimed at the professional market - someone that actually pays for the product..

In this market, I believe you will find less than 5% that are using PPP(oE) and/or DHCP.

If you are so eager to get dhcp support, why not grab the package in http://docs.astaro.org/attic/dhcp  and try to configure it?

I would have to disagree with you.  As the increase for broadband connections increase and prices drop especially for a cable or adsl connection that requires ppoe and DHCP I see even some of my larger clients leaning towards that type of solution.  I as a consultant...based on their needs cannot see a need to pay a huge inflated price for a  full T1 if the company does not have a huge upload requirement, and will suggest cable or perhaps a 1.5 adsl line that will cost them less than half the cost and get 200+ employees surfing the web happily.

well PPPoE isn't the best solution for a commercial business I agree with that.  I hate having PPPoE at home its just a pain tin the ass.

But saying DHCP isn't needed is not true at all.  The whole point in DHCP is to change client config without actually having to go to the clients computers.  You got 20+ comps in your organization you sure as hell dont want to edit each workstation for every config change to the ASL box.

Yes, DHCP is required, but you seem to be missing the point here...

A DHCP client is required by ASL where the WAN connection is not given a static IP address. Such a client is not included in ASL by default, but can be hacked in as others have noted.

A DHCP server is what will allow changes to workstation config on your LAN, but this is quite properly not the job of the firewall - in much the same way that ASL is also not a file-server. Where you have enough LAN machines for it to matter, deploying a DHCP service on an existing (NT/*nix) server is trivial.

you are missing my point. we're not discussing frame relay vs. ADSL here. I was merely implying that most companies will go for fixed IP setups and not DHCP/PPPoE solutions. And in my opinion, they should stay away from dynamic anyway.

The turn to DSL/Cable is a new trend, and historically - companies usually had frames/leased lines with permanently assigned IP's, while personal users mostly would use dynamically assigned addresses. Perhaps this is a reason why the PPPoE/DHCP support haven't been implemented into ASL sooner.

Time changes though, and I don't say Astaro have been quick turning to new trends ;-)
