UTM Software version - Best HDD to choose

I am experiencing occasional problems with my HDD.  Im going to replace it and am looking for advice as to the best in terms both of size and Make/model.

I had many god experiences on the Astaro board - and hope that this will be the first of many with the Sophos community

  • Honestly the true answer can't be given without deeper detail on your deployment.

Last I saw, of the major conventional hard drive manufacturers, HGST has the lowest field failure rate overall as shown at the following link.
    www.backblaze.com/.../

If your deployment is VERY basic "Packet Filter / IPS / VPNs" with very minimal logging/users I'd suggest a cheap SATA SSD to reduce on heat & chances of failures -- Not sure if it'd work but if another user here states it works I'd suggest a M.2 PCIe/NVMe based drive deployment to remove additional cables from your build.

If your deployment is pretty basic "Packet Filter / IPS / VPNs" with standard levels of logging a basic SATA HDD will suffice

If you start doing some of the more advanced stuff & have a good deal of users utilizing stuff such as Web Filtering + Caching, Mail Filtering, and etc this is where you should be looking into fast SAS drives + possibly raid configurations for your deployment. -- Large deployments with heavy use in filtering + caching can take a toll on the drives very quickly.
