RE: Give us your thoughts, feedback and questions on the new Sophos Community

I have installed free UTM on Vmware 9 with 2 GB ram and connected only one machine. After some time (not very busy surfing) I found that memory utilization is almost 68% !!. Is this an memory hungry UTM ?

While browsing there are some intermittent delays, like opening a new page and search anything on google, the delay is unacceptable.

And one last thing is why Sophos site is very complicated, when I try to download it was too confusing, after registration took more than 1 hour to get the authorization and took me lot of time to search for the download.

Why !!

  • 2GB RAM is far too less, don't start below 4GB.
What are the specs of the underlying hardware (CPU, NICs, HDDs)?

    • XG: HPE DL20 Gen9 (Core i3-7300, 8GB RAM, 120GB SSD) | XG 18.0 (Home License) with: Web Protection, Site-to-Site-VPN (IPSec, RED-Tunnel), Remote Access (SSL, HTML5)
    • UTM: 2 vCPUs, 2GB RAM, 50GB vHDD, 2 vNICs on vServer (KVM) | UTM 9.7 (Home License) with: Email Protection, Webserver Protection, RED-Tunnel (server)
  • 2 GB is plenty depending on which functions you have activated and how many users you have.
On largers networks with alot of traffic you def. need more RAM. I am running a Sophos UTM on a vServer with only 1 GB Ram that only serves a RED Tunnel Endpoint with no problems. (about 60% Ram usage)

  • Ben,

I agree, if you're only using some VPN or simple firewalling. As soon as intrusion prevention and web filtering come into play you will get the symptoms the OP has: lags, slow web browsing, faulsy reporting, ...
