Unable to restore from backup .abf file, 9.506-2 via web or shell . Driving me crazy.

Morning All,

I'm begging for your help should anyone know, I've been working on this for 24 hours now and am using a PFsense VM just to get by.

  • I have a very loaded UTM (full of config for websites, SMTP rules, web rules etc) about a years worth of tweaking with settings for the perfect setup, before I did some IP changes I took a backup utm_9.506002_2018-01-02_13-56.abf . Its a VM, with 2 x NICS.

  • Wanting to have redundancy for the new year, I spooled up a new VM using asg-9.506-2.1.iso, everything was fine, I set it up in SLAVE mode for HA, then noticed my MASTED powered down, frantically needing the web, I kept trying to bring it up, only to find its IP changed and it had factory reset.

  • No problem, I simply powered down UTM02 (Slave) and attempted to restore my backup..... after the "welcome, enter your details initial setup" I find the "NEW or RESTORE FROM BACKUP" page, I select my file (Chrome, Windows 10) this brings me back to the "welcome, enter your details" page, with the company name filled out correctly. After I click finish; I get nothing. Just the "Page is taking a long time, continue to wait? 30 seconds has passed" dialog box.

  • I tried another machine, with Windows 7, IE, FireFox, Chrome - all the same results, file imports, crashes

I have tried the following:

1) Using another machine to import the backup at the SETUP pages, Windows 7, IE10/11, Firefox, Chrome, incognito mode.
2) Continue with the setup, get into the full WEB UI, go to backup/restore tab, import backup, restore (Chrome hangs, machine doesnt load, reboot does not fix).
3) Continue with setup, get into Web UI, Import backup file, enable Root via Shell - use shell commands backup.plx -n cfg_XXX_XXXX -i to restore. Reboot, no shell access, no IP
4) Continue with setup, enable root via shell - check ifconfig, shows ETH0, restore backup via shell backup.plx, IFconfig shows LO only, no NICs. Add nic using ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0, reboot, no shell access, no IP.
5) Continue with setup, enable root via shell - check for file /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules = Missing, restore backup via backup.plx, check for file /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules = Still missing. Add the 70-persistent.net.rules file by manually typing one out using VI.... reboot, nothing, no shell or IP still.

My restore has over a years worth of work, my webpages, emails are currently in a non working state. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated! - I cannot find another archived old backup.

UTM Software Version, 9-506-2, VMware ESXI 6.0, 2 x vNICs.

Thanks in advance.

  • I have a very old backup from 2016, utm_9.355001_2016-03-19_01-15.abf I just found the file and the restore completes without a hitch.

    - This file is missing a lot of work, all of my website changes etc that were made. I will try to WINMERGE to compare the files to see whats gone wrong.

I'm wondering what's wrong with the 2018 file as to why it will not restore without breaking and dissociating all of the NICs. I am restoring over the top of the original UTM with the same MAC's and hardware setup.

  • There's a known bug in 9.506 with Hot-Standby VMs in ESXi.  Try not spinning up the standby VM - any luck with that?

  • Thanks for the reply Bob,

Its too little too late for my original VM was wiped as I was frantically trying to bring things back online. I thought the restoring backup was going to be my saving grace and I had a conflict with MAC's so needed to original machine with the original MACs to move things forward.

After running cc, RAW, lock_override, OBJS, interface, ethernet REF_DefaultInternal..... I can see that itfhw is empty and as such no interfaces come up and I cannot webgui in. or ping.

Instead, I should see : itfhw = REF_ItHwDefaultInternal         (As shown on my working, new vm).

When I change the STATUS=1 and w, the shell complains about interfaces not being present so being disabled.

If I try and force the interface up using ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 and ifconfig eth1 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0 and change both VMinterfaces to 'internal network' I still cant ping or get to the machine.

I've begun to rebuild from the ground up, missing tons of config, trying to read the backup file has lots of encrypted info I cant pull from, it will take me weeks to get back to where I was, a months of tweaking and performance tuning, I'm really hoping this inst the end of my relationship with Sophos, its quite the situation, not being able to recover from a backup.
