Cannot get internet when Sophos Home is added, not sure what to check

Hey folks,

I am new to Sophos UTM so I decided to set up my old computer at home as a VMware host and run UTM as a guest. I have 5 nics on the machine with 2 dedicated for the LAN and WAN for Sophos UTM. I have the most basic configuration that comes from setting up UTM but am having trouble accessing the web. I have the Luma home wifi devices as well but I am bypassing that atm (replacing with new APs). This is my current flow when testing:

Modem -> in WAN port on computer > Out LAN port to uplink to 24 port unmanaged switch -> AP plugged in switch. When I connect to the AP and try to browse the web, I get DNS messages. I can still browse internally granted that is by IP and not using DNS.

The WAN port is getting an IP from my ISP so I think that is good and I can ping internally. I am just not sure what else to check being new to this.

Thanks

  • First at all check if UTM itself has connectivity

Go to Support- Tools. There ping 8.8.8.8, after ping google.com to check if DNS its working

If webfilter is active disable it for the moment, and do a firewall rule to allow internal network to web surfing group. And another rule for dns

In Firewall-Nat, you have to do a masquerading (if its not) Internal Interface to Use Wan interface

Thats all for the moment, later on you can have a better look
