Sophos.. How you've let people down of recent with SophosUTM

Some people may see this as a rant I see as perhaps a way to bring attention to Sophos perhaps.

I started using Sophos UTM in mid 2013 and it was great however over the past year to year and a half or so Sophos UTM has been falling off the face of a cliff with bugs and problems. It seems every major patch now has some major function that is broken or something is wrong. I've been affected to the point were I can no longer suggest Sophos UTM as a suitable product.

Just sum up my major problems over the past year:

The 587 DHCP MTU problem that took a month to fix. Why did they lock you out form providing a user supplied MTU value is beyond me.

The recent signature update that caused segfaults.

Refusal to support to IA_PD to hint the DHCPv6 server from your ISP on the size of the prefix you want.

I can list more but this is enough.

The finial straw was installing 9.503-4 which competently broke IPv6 and it did not work after even doing a clean install. This update is just an example of how each major update is creating problems in this case with Active Directory with many users that was eventually pulled and re-released.

Also looking Sophos's new XG product form what i gather is incomplete and a buggy mess. I was looking at perhaps switching to that but learned that it has no DHCPv6-PD support which makes it useless for many deployments that have IPv6.

Overall, SophosUTM is a great product but it's not suitable with all the bugs and problems. Hopefully this can change and become how it was before previously.

On a better note Antivirus and endpoint products still still seem to be good.

  • Hi there,

I hear you, and i know how frustrating all this can be sometimes. But trust me, working daily on concurrent technologies at work, all my main home lab is still solidly Sophos UTM (ASG) based and i wouldn't much want anything else really. So this only to say that the grass is not greener elsewhere..

Hope it'll get better as well because i like this product, i really do =)

    Cheers,

    m.
