Sophos 9.5 Update : Firewall Down

Good Day,

I performed an Up2Date from the WebAdmin and now my Sophos Home won't boot.

Connected a monitor but only get the Logo. Hitting F2 several times shows me:

Waiting for device /dev/disk/by-lable/root to appear: ok

      fsck from util-linux 2.19.1

      fsck: fsck.isw_raid_member: not found

fsck: Error 2 while executing fsck.isw_raid_member for /dev/sda6

fsck failed. Mounting root device read-only

      Mounting root /dev/disk/by-lable/root

      mount -0 ro,data=ordered -t isw_raid_member /dev/disk/by-lable/root /root

      mount: unknown filesystem type 'isw_raid_member'

could not mount root filesystem -- exiting to /bin/sh

      $ SOPHOS Security Made Simple

This happens after the update is complete and during the reboot phase.

My system only has one 500GB disk and is not configured for raid 8-{.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • I had the same problem, the only solution for me was to reformat the device with 9.5.  It was a real pain in that ass.  It only seems to be happening to home users on specific hardware so support is non-existent.  I replied to a post someone else had about the problem, but there was never a solution.  Do you have a backup of your config somewhere? If you have access to DVD for the install, do it, so you don't have to deal with the headache of the USB install process.

  • I have reformatted three times. I can not figure out which Update is causing it but I got all the way past the 9.3xx updates and only 9.4xx and above were remaining..

No one has a solution for this or know whats causing it?

  • Sorry, no solution but suggestion.

Backup the system before installing the update(s).  When installing them you can download/install them manually from ftp://ftp.astaro.com/pub/UTM/v9/up2date/ .  Do one at a time.  If it all goes down the crapper, you'll be able to return to the same state when the backup was made.

I believe acronis products support ext3/4 type partitions.  I run mine under vm, so use a veeam to make backups.

  • I am going to try to use Macrium to image the disk at a factory default setting before I upgrade to 9.5 Hopefully I find out which of the 9.5's is breaking it and open a new thread for the that specific update and report back here. Then I will find all of these 9.5 threads and mention them in my thread as a kind of master ticket for issues tracking.

BTW I want to use VM but I am having a hard time getting the NIC 0 plugged directly to SFW and the VNIC2 in SFW to NIC 1... my research continues for how to do this properly untill then I am stuck on Bare metal

  • GBlando has the right answer - skip the Up2Date process and just reinstall from ISO with the 9.509 software ISO found at UTM Support Downloads.

  • Running 9.6, had this happen today.  The only solution to get back up was reimage my entire software appliance.  Then I rebooted it.  Guess what happened.  It was fine after installation, but reboot kills it.
