virtual UTM

Hi Guys question

I am having 2 x virtual servers installed to mirror each other. We are going to have XG135 firewall with fullguard plus.

my IT company has recommended we go for virtual UTM with fullguard plus.

what do you think is the best option?

  • Hi Graham,

We are offering Home versions of UTM and XG for free, you can try your hands on both the versions and settle for one. My recommendation to you will be the XG firewalls with SF-OS v17 on its way.

    Thanks

  • Is this an XG or a UTM Topic? You wrote about XG, but placed it in the UTM Section... On Virtual Environments are some differences in Licensing between XG and UTM, that's why I'm asking...

  • Thanks for the reply's, I did not know what section to place it in did not want to place it in multiple places. I am not to worried about the licence issues at the moment, I was asking about what do the community think is the best route? To go hardware as the XG or a virtual with UTM? I was under the impression that the UTM was being phase out for XG. So I am making sure I am getting still up to date package. It has taken me 6 months to get this money to buy more products for protection, I can not waste it.

    Hope you under stand

  • Hi, Graham, and welcome to the UTM Community!

I'm not ready to recommend XG, but your fear of buying a product that you will need to replace is unfounded.  Sophos' policy is to allow UTM license holders to transfer to an XG license with no penalty.  Your reseller should know that.  Depending on your needs you might be better off starting with the UTM.

At some point, Sophos will have developed the XG to have as many different capabilities as the UTM, and they will have created a transfer tool to move the UTM configuration to an XG.  I don't imagine that this will be before 2019, and probably not before 2020.  The hardware for the XG 135 is the same as the hardware for the SG 135 (UTM).

We sell both hardware and software versions, depending on the client's needs.  There are many factors to consider, so you need to have confidence in your reseller.

If you've chosen a strong reseller with plenty of experience installing UTMs, you should get their help in the initial setup.  If they don't, I would ask Sophos to recommend a reseller with that strength.  I wind up charging about twice as much to "fix" faulty designs as I would to create the initial installation.

    Cheers - Bob
