Slow upload Streams

Hello all, so some specs before i start,
Running Sophos UTM (fully updated) in Hyper-V on a 2012 R2 Dell T610
The system has 2GB RAM and 2 Cores
The internet link is a 100/40 link that goes directly into a NIC dedicated to Sophos
Everything is turned off apart from the firewall, and web server protection on a couple of domains,

My issue that i have been banging my head on the desk for 3 days now is the Plex server i am hosting has Terrible uploads when streaming media,
When i do a speed test with speedtest.net, DSLReports, i am getting a full 93mb/s down and 35mb/s up so plenty to stream.

However when i try the Googlespeedtest or the DSL Stream test Google Never goes over 8mb/s up and the streamtest i am unable to get a stable stream over 400kb/s no matter the server,
When i start to stream it works fine for about 1-2 seconds then just dies (i can hold a 6mb/s stream on DSL Reports ( http://www.dslreports.com/tools/streamtest ) for a good 2 seconds then it gives up, on the UTM it is showing only 300kb/s actually passing

RAM usage is only 26% and my cpu is not even going over 10%, i have changed the MTU to 1500 from 14XX and that has not helped either.
It seems Streaming based upload i cant get over 200kb/s (which is what plex does) Im completly lost as speedtest.net and speedtests i can get over 30 but not streaming?

Would someone be able to try http://www.dslreports.com/tools/streamtest aswell on a UTM network? the test is other then either 1.6 or 6 uplink stream.
And would anyone know what is going on? i have IPS Off, protection all that jazz off, its only the firewall,

oh QOS is off too,

  • Hi, Gregory, and welcome to the UTM Community!

What does doing #1 in Rulz tell you?

    Cheers - Bob

  • Hello,

I checked that and also followed the other rules it says to follow,
Those log files are all empty, UDP flooding is disabled and i cant see anything in the firewall logs related to it

We hooked a sonic wall up to the internet and can hold 3 6.4mb/s streams fine, but with sophos we can't do one,

Any other ideas, to my understanding i have set sophos with nothing more then some DNATs now, i cant see any filtering anywhere apart from on the home page that says

    Firewall:   1 434 packets filtered
  • I have no issues with 4 6.4mbps upload streams to that site via my network through a UTM.  No special settings to my knowledge.  I did set the MTU on my WAN interface, though, to override the ISP-DHCP delivered 576 (known issue - Sophos implemented a "fix" to allow us to set it).  Are you sure your MTU is set properly?

  • i found that article too during my troubleshooting and set it to 1500 aswell,

  • hi,

interestingly for me that site does report a way to low 0.7mbps speed. While normal upload tests show my normal speed. (25mbps), i do have plex to but cant tell you if anyoine suffers as nobody uses it outside the lan.

  • Could you see if there was actual data going out?
with the 3 default firewall rules they where all Green for me on my new box, but it was getting blocked, after allowing that traffic the buffering issues show up

  • I too am having trouble with my speeds lately.  I pay for 60/4, but am experiencing half that.  I have read a few posts on speed issues.  Would it be advantageous to clear the cache or do a DNS flush?  Posts regarding these two options are very old.  My knowledge is limited, so any help is appreciated.  I will re-read the rules Bob linked above...

Did you try either of those options Gregory?

  • I have installed a fresh Sophos UTM and XG VM, and also cleared the Cache, this does not solve this issue,
Overall speed is fine, its only when trying to stream with a single TCP stream (outgoing)
IE, trying to twitch stream, or doing the DSLReports test,

We have tested a Sonic Wall, and it seems to be working fine on that,
The only thing i can possibly think of is if its a hyper-V / Sophos getting along problem,
