UTM Home in VM/ESXi - Software/Hardware ISO

Hello, I am wondering if I am able to use UTM home within a VM/ESXi? I would have (3) interfaces on that ESXi host. One to my internet connection, one to my switch, and the other for whatever. Just wondering if I would be able to successfully deploy this, this way.

Also, would I need the software or hardware ISO of UTM home download?

Appreciate it in advance!

  • Yes, it will work well in ESX.  Use vmxnet3 for the network cards.  You will use the software image.

Great, I appreciate it. So, from my home ISP device. One port from LAN side to WAN side of Sophos. (Configured in vmxnet3) and another then the other vmxnet3 adapter from ESXI host to in home switch. Correct?

    Any particular reason for vmxnet3?

  • Yes, one port to WAN (cable/dsl/whatever), one port to LAN switch.  Some intel drivers are buggy in Linux, and using vmxnet3 avoids that issue and also performs better than virtualized intel driver.  Use vmxnet3 any time you can to get the best performance.  Some older OSes don't support vmxnet out of the box, but it will work for Sophos UTM.  Older linux OSes and Windows would just require installation of the vmware tools (open-vm-tools for linux is preferable over delivered vmware tools from esx).

  • Really appreciate the response. Thanks for the knowledge!
