Problem with ESXI 6 and UTM

I've been running Sophos UTM in an ESXi 5.5 VM for a while with no problems. I need to move to a new server. The new server has ESXi 6u2, and I copied the VM over, configured the network cards (Configured as E1000), and fired it up. Everything seems to work fine, except I seem to be dropping packets. If I run an extended ping to google.com, there are a number of 'Unreachable's, Going to websites sometimes works, and sometimes hangs a long time. Is there a setting in Sophos I need to change? Or is the problem in ESXi?

  • I would use vmxnet3 interfaces rather than e1000.  Is this ping from a client behind the UTM or from the UTM itself?

  • Thanks for the response!

Oddly, that wasn't one of the choices. I could only select E1000 or Flexible (If I recall correctly). No choice for vmxnet3.

The ping was from a laptop connected to the network LAN, connecting out to a server on the WAN (Google.com). Oddly, I saw a few dropouts after switching back to my old server/UTM, but websites are MUCH faster loading, and are no longer hanging like the new server was.

    On a related tangent:

Since I had previous problems with the first version of ESXi 6 (In addition to the packet loss thing, my drives would disappear after a few hours, and needed to reboot the ESXI server to bring them back), my confidence in ESXi is dropping fast. What are thoughts on moving to a free Xenserver instance? I saw that Citrix Enterprise is supported, not sure if the free version will work with UTM. Is Xen supported? Reliable?
