What is it? How does it work? What to do next?

I recently purchased a Sophos UTM 220 at a bank foreclosure.   It is brand new and unwrapped in the box with the activation key, ziplock and booklet.   

What is a UTM 220?   What does it do?  And, is this something the average person would use or is it more of a corporate item?

Also, the box says it has 3 years of TotalProtect listed on the side with a ship date of Sept 2014.   What does that mean?   Is that a warranty or software?

In looking at the Sophos site, I read things that said the first thing to do was activate it.  Is that right?    If I activate it with the key, does that mean only I would be able to use it?   If this is something corporate, who would be interested in it if I wanted to sell it? 

Any recommendations?
