Why do I get a Prompt to Authenticate with Proxy

Hello, hope you are well.

I have an issue where users are accessing an Oracle CRM Cloud Service application and are being prompted for authentication to the proxy server when the application is first run.

The application uses the proxy server configuration found under Internet Options in Control Panel. When you run the application, the proxy authentication pop up box appears, if you press cancel, the connection fails to the cloud URL. If you enter your Active Directory username and password, then it connects and prompts you for the CRM application logon.

What I find strange is that when prompted to authenticate to the proxy server, I can enter random key strokes into the username and password field and it will allow me to connect through.

Under Web Protection then Filtering Options, I have created an exception to skip authentication when accessing the URL, but I still get the logon prompt. I know this exception has something to do with reason why you can enter random key strokes for username and password and it allows you access, because with the exception turned off, you need to put in valid credentials to proceed.

So why when I have created an exception to bypass authentication for a specific URL do I still get the prompt, is this perhaps a bug or is there another way to stop the authentication pop-up.

If I use out old TMG Server as a proxy server with a similar configuration, I don't get a proxy authentication prompt.

Thanks in advance

Dave

  • Hi Bob, hope you are well.

Apologies for not acknowledging your reply as the e-mail alert went to my junk e-mail folder and I have been on leave for the past two weeks.

While I was away Sophos Support has fixed the problem. We are using the UTM in standard mode and not transparent, but the problem was the web protection filter exception we put in to bypass authentication for a selection of Tagged domains. This exception doesn't apply applied because the request on the Windows client is coming from a Java App instead of from a web browser. So we had to create a new exception and enter the URL pattern to match the domain that we want to bypass authentication.

This has resolved the issue of the application prompting for authentication.

Thanks for your time to reply.

    Regards

    Dave
